Welcoming the eternity of 8

Creativity burst is more than evident. How come?

I finished crafting 8th song base about an hour ago and ... once again really dig the result. This time it's not a typical doom metal song, in a way, it has a bit unusual rhytm to it and especially odd flow of guitars & bass. Hypnotic simplicity with two words.

Though as it's just a rough song base, it's hard yet to say how it will be in its' final form - it's already clear to me that this song will have a space domain in the middle of it. Currently it's 6-7 minutes long song.

Could well be, that I won't compose more new material for this package. The number of 8 feels like ... that's it.

Reality of 7th

Talk about inspiration ... I suddenly got the vibe to try out another new song idea I've had in mind, sort of hypnotic little piece. So I crafted drums and started composing. Composed the song from start to end in one short session - and then recorded the rough guitars & bass. Took bit over an hour all in all and now there's also song base # 7 ready. And I like it a lot! Weird little song. And probably the shortest of the pack since it's only bit over 4 minutes long.

Base #6 completed

Finished composing the sixth song base and recorded rough guitars & bass for the song. Seems to be 6-7 minutes long song with a touch of more tempo and certain kind of mood - according to the vision in a satisfactory way. It might have bit more tempo to it, but it's hardly a fast song ... no surprises there. I think there is room for some space sound / dark ambient elements in this song, too.

Overall length with the 6 songs now around 41 minutes, though probably bunch of minutes can be added to that sum - since the current lengths don't include some intros / outros I have in mind. Oh and also; recently I got an idea to ask one good friend to do some guest recording for one song intro (if not something more), certainly will be whole different kind of intro ... not space sounds, but traditional instrument. Nothing stops mixing it with space elements either, though. Can't say yet.

It's hard to say clearly yet how much or little there will be ambient moments overall in this package but I can say I have a feeling this could turn out having more basic metal elements and less experimental passages. There are no boundaries, the material shall form the way it wants to form. What matters is how it feels and that's what counts in the end.

But yeah, I think I will be composing still some new material, perhaps a song or two.

Crafting again

While I have been hyperactively jobhunting today, I had time to continue composing after few days break. This time I came up with certain kind of drumworks first, which was part of my idea for this brand new material - and then jamming riffs into the drums. Got the drums already completed, base work for them (6-7 minutes long at this stage) and main riff / melody came to me right away as I started jamming around.

My face must have been sight to see, I guess, since I instantly liked the main riff so much. Seems to be a start of a song exactly according to the vision I had for this one. And other of our two cats seemed to like the riff, too, as she soon came and conquered my throne, sat down and clearly wanted to listen to what I was playing. She was listening, and when I stopped playing finally "that" riff, she looked like oh blaah you stopped ... and walked away then. Ha!

Stormin' some more

Just completed recording another new song demo, whoa! And am really satisfied with the song at this stage. Yes, it's based on the weird happy (well, happier anyway) riff I had saved a year or two ago. As I thought, it will make a fitting exit song for this album / package. And it has a special meaning, too.

It's going to be perhaps 5 minutes long song, depending on the space elements that I envision for the end, it might be even closer to 6 minutes.

Next up ... will be the work on brand new compositions, based on the current ideas I have for few songs.

Stormin' with the doom

Today there was a (rather rare) summer storm here in Finland. It set a suitable mood for (doom) composing & structuring the next new piece. Yeah. That's what happened during the afternoon. I took yet another riff / melody composed already years ago, this time dating back to late August 2012. That riff formed the main part of new song and today I composed the all new mid section to the song. Came out nicely, and looks like it's going to be about 8 minutes long piece.

Now I have only one more old riff saved from past, and actually that is a weird one ... I have always felt it is too happy for M:D use. Until recently, as I got idea how I might be able to use it. It could be a good outro type song, weird happier case of ... something. We'll see what happens. One thing is for sure though; I'm going to compose all new songs still for this package - I have few good song ideas, a vision what I want to create, and I'm sure the new songs will come out easily.

Monday's doom piece born

Productive day, as I dug up another riff composed few years ago, played around with it - then started composing & structuring based on the old riff. Recorded rough demo of the song with guitars and bass. So, it's another new song base ready and I really like how it feels and sounds musically. Really heavy, crawling piece with a surprising end too. Hard to say exactly how long it will be in the end, might be about 7-8 minutes. Depends on the ending and also the possible intro.

Actually the old riff I used in this piece, was the oldest one I crafted after "the misery quadrant" was released in April 2011 - the old riff used was done 1st May 2011, rather soon after debut release was released. This might work as first song, since there's the intro thing going on already.

Day of soundworks

Continued today with M:D material - though most of today's work went with sound experiments. Got some new ideas for recording (won't bore you with details) and time really went fast. I spent about 6-7 hours playing guitar and testing. Huh! But it was well worth it and even that it felt like work, it also felt entertaining.

As I got soundtests completed, I went and continued working the second new M:D song (which I started structuring in March already). Got it completed today, and to my surprise it's not long song - kind of interesting flow to it, as it's certainly slow song, yet it has kind of a fast vibe. Ok, it might contain the fastest M:D section ever written but ... anyway. With this project, fast is more like "fast".

Feels good and now the work shall continue. There's composing to be made and structural work - as I'm not recording final guitars yet, only crafting real demo versions of the songs. The pic below was taken today while doing the sound experiments.

Time, time ... time + ASF revisited

Once again; some time has passed ... well, so what. No biggie. :)  The thing is, that originally I was going to work with one wall (see previous blog post) and I ended up working through about 15 walls. And one floor, too. What it meant, is that suddenly doomwork went into pause mode yet again, ... and it's now soon continuing, again.

In the meanwhile, I did something for the "another species falls" musicvideo I thought of doing years ago already: Added visual lyrics into the video and some effects, too. I thought I didn't have the original video saved anymore (elsewhere than in youtube) but I did have it so I was able to do the editing. It was all done today, took only about half an hour to make the edits - and 1-2 hours to render the video. Now it's more enjoyable to watch with the lyrics, so check it out if interested.
